Earn Your Instrument Rating
Ready to take your flying skills to the next level? Earning your Instrument Rating allows you to fly confidently in a wider range of weather conditions — through clouds, low visibility, and under air traffic control guidance. Whether you’re pursuing a career in aviation or seeking to become a more capable and safe pilot, an Instrument Rating is a powerful next step in your journey.
Instrument Rating Eligibility Requirements:
Hold at least a Private Pilot certificate
Read, speak, write, and understand English.
Instrument Pilot Aeronautical Knowledge Requirements:
Complete an approved Ground School program (in-person or online) and pass the Federal Aviation Administration Instrument Pilot - Airplane knowledge test.
Instrument Pilot Aeronautical Experience Requirements:
50 hours of cross-country PIC time (10 must be in airplanes).
40 hours of actual or simulated instrument time, including:
15 hours of instrument flight training with a CFII.
A long cross-country flight under IFR, covering at least 250 NM with three different instrument approaches.
Finally, you must pass a practical exam with an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI) or Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
While FAA minimums apply, most students feel confident and prepared after 45–55 hours of instrument instruction.
