Sport Pilot Eligibility Requirements

  • Read, speak, write, and understand English

  • Hold a valid U.S. driver’s license or obtain an FAA third-class medical certificate

  • Be at least 16 years old to fly solo

  • Be at least 17 years old to receive your certificate

Sport Pilot Aeronautical Knowledge Requirements

Ground Training

  • Complete a ground school course (online or in-person)

  • Pass the FAA Sport Pilot Airplane Knowledge Exam

Flight Training

  • Sport Pilot requires less training (20 hours vs. 40+), allows you to fly Light Sport Aircraft only, and doesn’t require a medical certificate. However, it does have limitations — such as no night flying, no flights above 10,000 feet, and no carrying passengers for hire.
